Ormidale House
Kyles of Bute, Argyll, Scotland
For a Private Wedding, Meeting or Celebration, this rural retreat set in stunning countryside, offers accommodation to sleep up to 66 guests, and has been described as “probably the best party house in Scotland”. Located on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland, Ormidale House offers great flexibility with three buildings available for booking separately or together.
The main house has six reception rooms altogether including a large dining hall which will seat 24 in style and comfort, and the rest of the house lends itself ideally to big groups for family celebrations, anniversaries and corporate team building events.
The two other newly renovated buildings have space for an even bigger party! The Mill House sleeps only 22, but it has a fabulous open plan living area of nearly 1,000 square feet with a hanging landing which makes a great spot for speeches or ceremonies. The Old Barn has a more traditional layout with separate dining room, kitchen and living rooms, and sleeps up to 16 in some style and comfort.
Ormidale House was built as a seat of Clan Campbell in 1696. After ongoing minor changes through the centuries, in 1900 the house was substantially extended by the renowned Scottish architect Robert Lorimer to form the well-laid out, comfortable, bright, light, and spacious 13 bedroom “laird’s house” that is available for weekend or weekly rent today. Whichever house you choose, our aim is to make Ormidale as luxurious a place to stay as the nicest small hotel, but at a fraction of the cost and without any of the formality you’ll find in a hotel, and of course with the option of being completely self catering.
Accommodation in the main house is for up to 31 in 13 bedrooms, with maximum adult occupancy of 24. Eight bathrooms, ten loos. The Mill House accommodates up to 22 in 9 bedrooms, and The Old Barn up to 16 in 7.
Although just an hour and a half from Glasgow, Ormidale sits in some of the loveliest scenery in Scotland. The Kyles of Bute are renowned amongst both walkers and sailors as amongst the most stunning bits of coast in Scotland. Whatever the weather in Argyll – and we do enjoy a remarkably mild micro-climate - this is great location for site seeing, with every corner revealing a new variation on the theme of mountain, loch, valley, sky, woodland, sea, rock, beach. The Cowal peninsula is a fabulous base for an active holiday with marvelous wildlife, numerous gardens and other tourist attractions to visit, and all sporting activities catered for.
Ormidale is available on a self-catering or fully-catered basis.
The Mill House
The Mill House took two and a half years to restore, and was christened by its first guests as “the wow factory.” With rooms on four levels, it will accommodate up to 14 adults, and up to 22 guests in total, in real style and luxury. The main feature is the open plan 80m2 ground floor reception area which opens up from a fabulous kitchen, through the dining area with vaulted ceiling, into a generous living / lounging area. The dining and lounge areas feature the original exposed stone wall and incorporate a large glass archway. Under floor heating throughout the house is provided by an environmentally sustainable ground source heat pump.
The large stylish contemporary kitchen area features a granite work surface throughout, twin stainless steel sinks and two dishwashers, two electric ovens, a large American style fridge freezer, and gadgets galore. The separate utility room features washing machine and drier, an additional large fridge and freezer, and extra storage. An additional South-facing sitting room on the mezzanine floor, again with slate floor and original exposed stone wall, gives access through a pair of french doors onto another terrace with garden furniture and to the private rear garden, river and woods.
There are nine bedrooms altogether, each offering double or twin accommodation. The bedroom layout makes the most of the available space to maximize the number of guests we can accommodate, so while none of the rooms are enormous, four of them have either additional bunks or fold-away beds to increase the overall capacity to 22 including children. The six main bedrooms all have stylish contemporary wash-hand basins. Four bedrooms feature raised platform beds with storage underneath. There are three stunning bathrooms, with wall to wall travertine marble walls and slate floors, two of which feature jacuzzi baths, and a separate sauna.
The Old Barn
The Old Barn has taken nearly three years to complete and no expense has been spared in establishing it as the most luxurious of our stable of properties. A travertine marble floor runs throughout the ground floor. The property has under floor heating through both floors. The house will accommodate up to 16 guests in total, with our maximum adult occupancy set at 12 to reflect the dining room capacity.
The kitchen / breakfast room features an original exposed stone wall but is wonderfully light thanks to the large glass archway and door out to the private cobbled courtyard terrace. Neff, Gaggia and Bosch kitchen appliances underline the commitment to quality and to marrying genuine traditional materials to the most up-to-date facilities. There is an American-style fridge freezer, single oven, double oven, microwave, halogen hob, large toaster and coffee machine.
The six double / twin rooms upstairs are complemented by a bunk room for children and the downstairs TV room can convert into an additional double bedroom for extra guests, or if a party require a downstairs bedroom for an elderly or disabled couple. Five of the bedrooms have wash-hand basins, and most have king size or super king beds. There is a downstairs loo and shower room, and a sauna. Two other bathrooms, featuring stunning floor to ceiling travertine tiles and corner jacuzzi baths, as well as powerful showers, are on the first floor. |
